Subjects are followed as they seek love, often via dating agencies, and are typically shown preparing for and embarking on first dates with potential partners. Although the series ostensibly operates with the full co-operation of participants and their families many of whom are shown in interview scenarios , much criticism has been levelled at what some perceive as the condescendingly humorous tone adopted by the programme-makers. This humour, however, takes two distinct forms.
This lack of focus is reflected by the absence of a decisive mode of approach. However, all too often this proves to be an uneven mix. Similarly, the story of office-worker Ray, who suffers from a learning disability, provided a soap-like element to his segments when it was revealed that his ex-girlfriend — now managing the dating agency which was attempting to find him a new partner — was having second thoughts about their split. For example, in the second episode of series two, the camera is following Crouzon syndrome sufferer Steve as he prepares for a first date, when his mobile phone rings.

People told me I would never find love, and no romantic partner would accept everything that comes along with my disability. I refused to believe them, and it worked — just ask my partner. Finding a partner can be difficult for anyone, but for people with disabilities, there are extra barriers in place. Many believe the biggest barriers stem from society’s often-skewed views of our capabilities and what it means to be disabled.
Many are shocked to learn that people with disabilities have active social lives and romantic relationships, including sexual ones — gasp! I watched the first episode of the new Undataebles series last week. As some one with a learning disability, I felt it really showed a positive image of people with a disability in their hunt to find love and relationships. As someone with a learning disability, I think that people with a learning disability have a right to able to go out on dates, meet partners and to have relationships.
Often, on TV, people with a learning disability are shown in a certain way. I think having real people with disabilities dealing with real life issues proves those are just wrong. I also like the way that the people from the dating agencies support the people on the show to be positive about going on dates.
